As we have
previously discussed, unlike science where there is constant progress,
philosophy rarely progress. However, when philosophers wanted to solve some of
the basic questions of existence, they found that some of them were beyond the
limits of human comprehension.
There are
eight questions (or mysteries) that have been never solved, and probably, they
will never be. These are (I add a description to 4 of them because I consider
them the most important, out of the eight):
ü Why is there something rather than nothing?
ü Is our universe real?
o
For me, out of these eight, this is probably the most complicated
mystery (to give a possible explanation or solution) because we don’t know if
the world we are currently living in, everything is happening is real or is
just an illusion.
o
That’s what Rene Descartes referred to a hypothesized ‘evil demon’.
ü Do we have free will?
o
I consider this
question really complex to understand because there is a relation between our
actions and what is predestinated for us.
o
We don’t know if our
actions are controlled by a casual chain of preceding events, or if we’re truly
free agents making decisions of our own volitions.
ü Does God exist?
o
This is a tough
question because it relates with each person’s beliefs. A Christian will accept
the existence of God; however, an atheist will deny it. For that reason, I
think these questions should be analyzed from the point of view of each
individual.
ü Is there life after death?
o
Again, this will
never be answered; moreover, it would be until we die, when we are going to be
able to ‘prove’ this idea/question.
ü Can you really experience anything objective?
ü What is the best moral system?
ü What are numbers?
In
conclusion, philosophy poses many deep and difficult questions; moreover,
sometimes is very hard or almost impossible to give a possible explanation.
This is what happened with the eight questions mentioned above, where for
centuries nobody has given a possible solution or explanation.
